This paper will examine the status of Hong Kong women for the two-hundred year period (approximate), covering the 1800 and 1900's. 2. 1682 How has the changeover of Hong Kong in 1997 affected the national identity of the H.K. English population?

This paper will make a strong case for Hong Kong as one of the world's only true cosmopolitan centres. A premium will be placed on its history and the dominance of the economy. The study will move to look at how identity in Hong Kong may have changed, paying particular attention to the English population. Efforts will be made to provide a well-rounded approach to the situation that touches on a variety of aspects of life. It will be argued that the primary fears have been China's systematic abuse of human rights. Examples will be used to legitimize these fears. The importance of economics in Hong Kong life will be touched upon, and the behaviour of the government with regard to the economy in the post-retrocession period will be detailed. The final sections of the paper will mesh this authors own research with the existing body of knowledge. Surveys and other field work have been conducted in order to gain a primary account of the situation. This research has concluded that there have been some adjustment problems, but for the most part it is 'business as usual' for Chinese and British in Hong Kong alike.
