In the last two years, the media has done a thorough job in exploiting the image of Monica Lewinsky. She has been sexualized, objectified, and demonized by the media. This paper looks at Monica Lewinsky's exploitation using author John Berger's art depiction as well as headlines from various newspapers and publications. What we find out is that sexism continues to be heavily ingrained all around us. The war on Lewinsky, like the system's war on women, is part of capitalism's interest to keep women segregated to a certain sphere. 11 pgs. 17 f/c. 10b.

2.1864 The Age of Innocence and Body Image.
This paper is about how society and the mass media are obsessed with the body image of women. The paper provides an intensive critique of how high society views the human flesh and how women are objectified and defined by socially constructed images. The issue of body image, the social construction of it, and how people can become victim to the desires and values that their own society constructs for them, is examined. The paper further discusses that the construction of such images, and the projection of them unto women, continues to this day through stereotypical portrayals by mass media advertisements. Because advertisements commodify women in the marketplace, where the women's sexuality is objectified, exploited, and domesticated, political/capital, and sexism issues are raised in the paper. 9 pgs. 9 f/c. 4b.

3.2148 The Silencing of the Female Voice in Adolescence.
Carol Gilligan declares that "The silencing of the female voice in adolescence is enforced by the wish not to hurt others but also by the fear that in speaking her voice will not be heard." There are certain stereotypical portrayals of women in mass media that make the sexism of our society transparently clear. It also disallows women to have their own sense of self. This process inflicts extreme damage to the female voice in adolescence. In Reviving Ophelia: Saving the Selves of Adolescent Girls, Pipher sees America's culture as "girl-poisoning". She shows how a certain brand of femininity is imposed on adolescent girls. This process, in her perspective, obliterates the confidence and self-knowledge that these young girls have amassed since their own childhood. In a tragic sense, their own peers act as enforcers. 6 pgs. 9 f/c. 5b.
